The Big Ten released the conference opponents for the 2019-2020 Big Ten season on Wednesday afternoon.
Maryland is slated to have home and away matchups with Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan State, Northwestern, Ohio State, and Rutgers.
They will play Michigan, Purdue and Nebraska solely at home and Minnesota, Penn State, and Wisconsin solely on the road.
At first look this seems to be a favorable draw for the Terps. They avoid playing a super talented Michigan team twice and avoid playing at Purdue where they lost last season. They also get to play Michigan State at home this year, where last year their only matchup with the Spartans was in East Lansing. Tom Izzo’s squad has a legitimate case to be the preseason No. 1 team in the country.
Of their three road only opponents, only Wisconsin finished top six in the Big Ten this past year and the Badgers are losing a lot of talent from last season. All three of those games are matchups where the Terps could be the favorite.
Playing talented teams like Michigan State, Iowa and Ohio State twice isn’t ideal for their record, but they will at least get the chance to see all those teams at the Xfinity Center. The Terps were an impressive 8-1 at home in Big Ten play last season.
Obviously a lot can change between now and the start of the season, but this schedule gives Maryland a real chance to finish top three in the conference. There are still several players around the league who will be testing the draft waters and have until May 29th to return to school, so rosters will look different. Maryland is waiting on the decisions of Bruno Fernando and Anthony Cowan Jr.
The non-conference opponents and full basketball schedule will be released at a later time.
