Terps head to Ann Arbor for final road match of the regular season

Maryland heads on the road for a final time in the regular season, visiting Ann Arbor Thursday to face the Michigan Wolverines.

The Terrapins (4-8-5, 2-5-2) are coming off of a solid performance on Sunday against the Ohio State Buckeyes, finishing with a 1-1 draw in Columbus. Freshman Emily McNesby scored her first career goal for Maryland’s only goal of the match.

Maryland finds themselves on the outside looking in at the Big Ten Tournament picture with 8 points in conference play, putting themselves in 12th place. A win Thursday could see the Terrapins leapfrog past the Wolverines (7-8-1, 3-5-1), who have 10 points. The top eight teams in the conference make the Big Ten Tournament, and Maryland currently sits five points behind eighth place Minnesota.

A point of emphasis for the Terps all season has to been to generate more shots and put more shots on net, and they will be looking to do so again Thursday night. Redshirt freshman Alyssa Poarch will look to find the net, as she leads the team in shot attempts but has just one goal on the season.

Poarch has sat in an attacking midfield role recently rather than at forward, but has done well to feed attackers like Jarena Harmon and Darby Moore. Harmon leads the team with six goals scored, Moore has scored two.

Both teams have struggled in conference play, with Michigan winning just one out of their last six games and Maryland with one win in their last eight.

Both teams, though, have picked up wins against ranked conference opponents this season. Maryland was able to upset then-No.14 Northwestern on October 7, while the Wolverines took down then-No.17 Wisconsin on September 20.

Maryland will look to contain a talented duo of Michigan sophomore midfielders Thursday night. Nikki Hernandez and Sarah Stratigakis have had success in the attacking third this season, as Hernandez has scored seven goals and Stratigakis has scored six, good for first and second place on the team. Hernandez has also assisted on six goals this season as well.

The last time the two teams met was in 2016, a 3-1 victory for the Wolverines in Ann Arbor.
