Maryland downs William & Mary to open season

How about that for a start to the season?

The Terrapins captured their first victory of the season tonight with a thrilling 2-1 victory over William & Mary, thanks to an 88th minute game winner from forward Jarena Harmon.

The game-winner was the second of the game for the senior, who tallied her first goal inside of five minutes from the opening whistle, cashing in on a corner kick played by senior midfielder Hope Lewandowski.

But, just two minutes later, the Tribe evened up the match as sophomore Courtney Miles opened up her collegiate scoring career with a goal off of a rebound.

The play went back and forth for much of the remainder of the match until Harmon’s late winner, which was yet another rebound goal.

A two goal evening should provide a much-needed boost for Harmon, as well as a Terps attack which struggled to score goals at times in 2017. Harmon only managed a single goal all of last season on nine shots.

The season opener was played in Harrisonburg, VA as part of the Fairfield Inn by Marriott JMU Invitational hosted by James Madison University.

The Terps are back in action Sunday against hosts of the invitational, James Madison, at 2:00 p.m.
