Maryland faces off against Illinois in first round of Big Ten Tournament

The Maryland softball team landed the No. 11 seed and will play its first contest in the Big Ten Tournament against No. 6 seed Illinois this afternoon.

The tournament consists of 12 teams and will comprise of single eliminations from Thursday up until Saturday’s championship game.

Illinois finished 13-8 in conference play compared to Maryland’s 7-16. When the Terps and Fighting Illini last faced off, Illinois took all three games to land the series win.

Illinois pitchers haven’t been particularly outstanding this season, with pitchers Emily Oestreich and Taylor Edwards wielding conference play-only ERAs of 3.29 and 3.40, respectively. However, the Fighting Illini have won 11 of their past 13 games, whereas the Terps are currently in the midst of a nine-game losing streak.

This will be the first time that the Terps have made it to the Big Ten Tournament since 2015. The tournament will take place at the Goodman Diamond on University of Wisconsin’s campus in Madison, Wisconsin.

The first pitch will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday and all games will be broadcasted live on the Big Ten Network and BTN2Go
