The Maryland softball team will play in College Park for the first time this season when it hosts the Maryland Invitational this weekend.
The Terps started the 2018 campaign with four straight road tournaments and played to a 6-13 overall record.
“It’ll just be nice to be home,” said sophomore infielder Brigette Nordberg. “Just being able to play on our home field [and] to see our home fans and have everyone come out.”
Maryland’s offense has been anchored by Nordberg and senior captain Sky Ellazar; both have started all 19 games and sport averages above .300. Nordberg leads the team with a .316 clip, eight RBIs and six doubles. Ellazar is batting an impressive .308 with two home runs, the only player with multiple homers.
The pitching tandem of freshman Ryan Denhart and junior Sydney Golden has started all but two of the team’s 19 games. Denhart has worked to an outstanding 2.22 ERA and threw three complete games in her nine starts. Golden, a transfer, has adjusted well in her first season as a Terp, compiling a 4.01 ERA with one complete game.
Head coach Julie Wright said the team is focused on translating their promising stats into a better overall record. She pointed specifically to holding runners on the basepaths, improving infield defense and coming through with runners in scoring position as aspects the team is looking to improve.
Wright also said the pitching staff is working on “how to make [pitches] a little more crisp so that its a swing-and-miss versus a foul ball.”
Maryland will face its first repeat opponent at a second tournament. After playing last weekend at the Louisville Invitational, the Terps will square off against Miami University of Ohio once again on Friday. In their March 4 meeting, Maryland lost a tight contest by a 2-1 score.
Maryland will play its home opener against Utah (9-7) on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. On Friday, the Terps will face Miami (OH) (6-7) and Jacksonville (11-9) at 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., respectively. The team then closes out its first homestand with a pair of Saturday games against Utah and Yale (0-8) at 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. All games will be broadcast on BTN Plus and live-Tweeted from the Maryland Softball Twitter account.
