The Maryland Terrapins volleyball team looks to upset No. 1 Penn State when the two squads square off in State College Saturday at 7 p.m.
After the Terps loss to Penn State in three quick sets last month, Maryland hopes for an easier match tomorrow. However, the previously 3rd-ranked Nittany Lions are riding a 14 game win streak, while the Terps have lost three straight.
Penn State features the Big Ten’s most dominant offense, which enters tomorrow’s match with a .354 hitting percentage through 87 sets. Outside hitter Simone Lee leads the Nittany Lions with 3.93 kills per set, and has undoubtedly benefited from Bryanna Weiskircher’s 6.64 assists per set.
Despite Maryland possessing an offensive weapon in Gia Milana, the sophomore outside hitter has struggled immensely in the past two matches.
After taking the second most swings in Maryland’s last match against No. 6 Nebraska, Milana recorded an inefficient four kills. Her 13 attack errors over the past two matches contributed to a poor hitting percentage of -.035 during that span.
Maryland’s offense will need a productive night from Milana if the Terps wish to compete with Penn State; however, Maryland will have outside hitter Erika Pritchard to rely on. The freshman continues to lead the conference with an impressive .44 service aces per set.
Maryland’s star libero Kelsey Wicinski will likely miss her tenth consecutive match as she continues to rehab an upper body injury.
