The Left Bench presents its local coverage on High School Football: Good Counsel tops Bishop Sullivan in a defensive showdown

On Friday, Sept. 22 Our Lady of Good Counsel defeated Bishop Sullivan 3-0.

This game was a showcase of talents between University of Maryland commits Tyler DeSue from Bishop Sullivan and Tyler Baylor from Good Counsel.

DeSue, a three-star quarterback from Virginia Beach, and Baylor, a three-star defensive end from Olney, Maryland, were the stars everyone came to see.

Maryland head coach D.J. Durkin was in attendance along with recruiters from UCF and Virginia Tech to get a first-hand look at the top recruits showcasing their talents.

Throughout the first quarter, both teams struggled to get a rhythm going and showcased very little offense.

Bishop Sullivan ran a spread offense similar to Maryland’s offense under Offensive Coordinator Walt Bell, but could not move the ball. Coming into this game, Bishop Sullivan’s high-powered offense was averaging 29.5 points per game.

Against Good Counsel, DeSue looked comfortable running the zone read and often made defenders miss the entire night. However, he struggled throwing the ball and completing long passes.

“It went pretty well. I gave him a couple of bumps but it’s nothing but love.” Good Counsel’s Baylor said on Desue.

Finally going into the second quarter, Good Counsel’s offense started to show life and scored the only points of the game: a field goal.

From there, both offenses continued to gain good field position but could not capitalize on it. Both defenses kept their teams in the game, especially Good Counsel.

The Baylor-led Good Counsel defense, was ferocious to the ball, forcing sacks and havoc for the Bishop Sullivan offense all night long.

The 6-foot-5 220 pound defensive end set the tone for the defense, often facing double teams and forcing the Bishop Sullivan offense to run and throw away from him.

With Good Counsel being a 17 point underdog against Bishop Sullivan, this was a huge win that will motivate the team for the rest of year.

“We are capable of anything..we don’t care about the ranking; all we do is just come out and play.” Tyler Baylor said.

With this win, Good Counsel is now 3-1 and is ranked No.10 in Maryland according to the Washington Post. They will face Northwest this upcoming week, looking to continue this winning streak.

Bishop Sullivan, now 2-3, will look to bounce back against Colquitt County High School this week in Moultrie, Georgia.
