Following a 17-4 rout of then-No. 16 Johns Hopkins, senior goalie Emily Kift and freshman attacker Brindi Griffin were honored with Big Ten weekly awards. Kift earned Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors, while Griffin was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week.
Kift, in her first start of the season, filled in well for sophomore sensation Megan Taylor, who was sidelined due to injury, according to the team. Kift saved 10 shots and allowed just four goals against the Blue Jays, yielding a .714 save percentage. She shares the award with Mira Shane of Michigan.
Maryland goalies have now accounted for five of a possible seven Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week awards this season.
Griffin was all over the place for the Terps on Sunday, recording two goals, one assist, two ground balls and one forced turnover. The freshman’s three points were a season-high. These player of the week honors are the first both Kift and Griffin have earned.
Kift, Griffin and the No. 1 Terps (7-0) are back in action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. when they host No. 11 Penn (6-1) in College Park.
