The No. 2 ranked Maryland Women’s Lacrosse team (2-0) plays host to No. 1 North Carolina on Saturday at 3 p.m. for a rematch of last year’s NCAA Championship game.
For the first time since the 2007 season, the women’s team will be playing at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium. The women’s game will be preceded by the men’s game against Yale starting at noon.
The Terps are coming off a 17-13 win against Georgetown last weekend in which Megan Whittle and Caroline Wannen led the attack with six points each. Whittle, who scored five goals on the day, was named Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week for her efforts.
The last time these two teams met was in Chester, Pennsylvania, when the Tar Heels ended the Terps’ season in heartbreaking fashion by a final score of 13-7. Despite the memories of last May, head coach Cathy Reese has been preaching all season that the Terps will simply take this as another regular season game.
“The Maryland-Carolina game is always an exciting one,” Reese said following the victory at Georgetown. “Coming off [the National Championship loss], I know that is still fresh in everyone’s mind, but at the same time we’re different and they’re different, and we’re trying to get our feet under us right now.”
The two teams have met in three of the last four NCAA Championship games and have met in 37 games all-time. The Terps hold the upper hand in the all-time series, 24-13.
The game will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
