3-star linebacker Eriq Gilyard decommits from Maryland

Trinity Christian Academy (Fla.) 3-star linebacker Eriq Gilyard decommitted from the University of Maryland, he announced on Twitter Monday afternoon.

Gilyard previously committed to the Terps in mid-November, becoming Maryland’s first Class of 2018 commit.

The commitment was surprising to many since it came just 10 days after Maryland offered him, while he also held high-profile offers including Alabama, Michigan and Clemson.

The decommitment puts coach DJ Durkin and his staff back at the starting line, as Gilyard was the sole Class of 2018 commit. Although very early, Maryland’s Class of 2018 ranked No. 37 in the country with Gilyard and showed Durkin’s ability to spark interest from Florida recruits.

Gilyard, the 26th ranked outside linebacker in the nation according to 247sports, did not mention any new frontrunners after re-opening his commitment.
