Maryland linebackers Jermaine Carter Jr. and Shane Cockerille were named honorable mentions on the All-Big Ten defensive team by conference media Tuesday.

Both members of the linebacker duo both registered more than 100 tackles for the Terrapins and Cockerille finishing third in the Big Ten with 108 tackles. Carter also had 100 tackles in 2015 and was an honorable mention after that campaign as well.

The recognition for Cockerille puts a cap on his first season at linebacker. The junior from Baltimore was a fullback for the 2015 squad and even played quarterback for the second half of a game against Indiana. He switched to defense this spring and recorded eight tackles for loss and three sacks in the regular season.

Carter’s five sacks rank second on the team and the junior is coming off a brilliant game against Rutgers in which he had a career-high 15 tackles. He also stripped the ball loose from running back Justin Goodwin and recovered the fumble following Goodwin’s reception in the third quarter.

Carter and Cockerille were selected by media members covering the Big Ten.

Earlier in the day, wide receiver Teldrick Morgan was named the conference’s special teams player of the week. The senior had an 83-yard punt return touchdown in Maryland’s win over Rutgers Saturday. He finished with 113 yards on three punt returns.
