Jamal Hunt Jr., the 5-foot-10-inch, 170-pound senior point guard from Hodgson Vocational-Technical High School, plans to walk on and join Rutgers University’s basketball team this fall.

Part of the reason why Hunt wants to go to Rutgers is because of what he’s heard about the school from the people he knows. Hunt said people like Scarlet Knights football player Manny Taylor and basketball player Corey Sanders have told him the school is a great place.

“I just see a lot of opportunity there at Rutgers,” Hunt said. “I just want to give it a chance, because the people there that I know tell me it’s a good school. I hope to soon find that out for myself.”

Hunt is coming off of a season in which he averaged 22 points and almost five assists per game. His ability to shoot the deep ball and shut down opponents on defense make him a well-rounded player.

“He (Hunt) is a scrappy player and a very good shooter,” Hodgson Vo-Tech head coach Tony Coleman said. “Defensively, he’s aggressive and he takes pride in trying to stop his opponent. He plays with a lot of passion.”

Hunt said he started playing basketball when he was nine years old, and has loved the sport since the first time he held the ball in his hands.

“I want to go far with this,” Hunt said. “Basketball took me places I don’t think other things could.”

On the court, Hunt said he tries to be as vocal as possible on both sides of the floor. He likes to take control of the tempo of the game when he has the ball in his hands. Hunt said he wants to provide Rutgers leadership on the court, among other skills.

“I’m not the tallest guy on the floor, but I have the most heart,” Hunt said. “I really think I can help this team if I get the opportunity.”

Hunt said one of the biggest challenges in his life was bouncing back from a broken nose he suffered in May 2015. The injury forced Hunt to stop playing basketball for eight weeks.

Being away from the game made Hunt lose confidence in himself. Hunt said he was able to regain his confidence after he got over his fear of getting hurt again. This motivated him to step back on the court and continue playing the game he loved.

“That was definitely a big challenge because I think I lost it when I broke my nose,” Hunt said. “I’m back and my confidence is through the roof right now.”

In order to prepare to walk on, Hunt said he is constantly training to improve his game. He works with his father every day after coming home from school. Whether it’s lifting weights, doing plyometric, jogging or eating right, Hunt said he’s willing to do whatever it takes to reach his goal.

“I’m doing everything I can to be ready because I don’t have an offer at Rutgers, so it’s a presentation for me,” Hunt said.
