Desmond Holmes: Ready to dominate

Desmond Holmes, the 6-foot-5, 310-pound junior tackle from Cardinal O’Hara High School in Springfield, Pennsylvania, is a dominant force on both the offensive and defensive lines.

Despite Cardinal O’ Hara finishing the season with a 1-9 record, Holmes said there were several bright spots for him, as he was very proud of his year.

“I knew that I was going to have to step up and play a big role my junior year,” Holmes said. “I really worked hard and it was probably my best season.”

Holmes can get off the ball quickly and uses his power and size to overwhelm people in front of him. Cardinal O’Hara head coach BJ Hogan said he has the ability to be a very good player in college.

“Size wise, he’s got long arms, he’s pretty athletic and he can run,” Hogan said. “These are some things that college coaches are looking for.”

Holmes currently has offers from Old Dominion University and Duquesne University. He said he has interest in both schools and thinks they’re both solid options. Hogan said he has the potential to receive more offers during the next few months.

“We’re getting calls from all these BCS schools,” Hogan said. “It’s just about who’s going to stop by in the spring and see him play and workout during spring ball.”

Holmes said he wants to go to a college where he can be a great student and find something to do the rest of his life. He stressed the importance of academics and finding the right people to guide him through college.

“I want a school where I can become the best football player possible and the best student-athlete possible,” Holmes said. “Academics are more important than football, so I want a school where I can do well with my school work and have a lot of people to guide me.”

Off the field, Holmes said he’s been researching into potential career paths in college. He said he’s interested in business and journalism, but isn’t exactly sure what he wants to study in college yet.

On the field, Holmes said his mentality is to dominate. He also said his community and family are big motivators for him when he plays. Holmes’ father was the person who introduced him to football.

“At first I didn’t want to play football,” he said. “I just played football because my dad threw me out there, but later I started loving everything I did with football. It was great. I just loved everything about it.”

Holmes said football holds a special place in his heart. He said it is a blessing that has changed his life for the better.

“It leads you, directs you and teaches you discipline,” Holmes said about the game. “It starts brotherhoods and creates bonds for life. It’s just an amazing thing,”

Heading into his senior year, Holmes wants to have a dominant senior season where he can pick up offers from more schools. He also set a goal for his team.

“Individually I did better, but as a team we didn’t do that great,” Holmes said. “So I definitely want us to do better as a team and get as far as possible.”
